Still at the Dock
Several more fix-ups before setting sail.
Hopefully nobody called the Coast Guard after I didn't check in yesterday! We are still at the dock in VA, not GA. Sad! BUT this is kind of what you sign up for when you are cruising. Schedules are merely aspirational.
As reported in last week’s post, our professional captain came aboard LAST Sat evening (ie 10/19, and spent all day Sunday investigating every nook and cranny on the boat. While we did have the boat surveyed when we bought her last year (incidentally, almost exactly a year ago, this week). There were several more items the captain turned up.
I’ll just mention probably the most serious item. The main sheet traveler block was cracked. “Block” is just sailor talk for two or more pulleys in a single frame. Should this block fail, we would lose control of our boom, and thus our entire mainsail, and that would be VERY BAD. So replacing that block was a must do before we do any serious sailing. We did that repair yesterday. It was not too bad at all, took under an hour. The new block. after replacement, is today's blog thumbnail. (the large black double pulley).
There are various other replacement parts we had to order and a to-do list of other repairs and fix ups we had to do this past week. I won't go into all those, here. The captain has returned to his home for the week, and is returning back to our boat, tonight.
We will try for GA again Wednesday of this coming week, weather permitting!
