I picked this thumbnail because this has been my view most of the week! Fuel filters, oil filters, starter batteries, etc etc. NOT umbrella drinks on a beach. Sad! Anyways …
Well it’s been a crazy few weeks. In summary
- Packed car full of sh*t for boat living (clothes, dishes, tools, etc)
- Drove 2/3 way across the country
- Put boat in water and posted up at dock
- Loaded up boat with all the sh* from the car
- Spent a couple days organizing boat (still MUCH to do though)
- Drove 2/3 way back across country with empty car
- Prepped house for extended absence
- VOTED! Our ballots arrived on the day we were leaving. HARRIS / WALZ 2024 !!!
- Flew back to boat
- Spent last 4 days getting boat ready for sailing
I’ll maybe make a separate post about all the stuff we had to fix / prep on the boat, but I fear that may be boring reading, so instead let’s talk about interesting stuff.
Next stop – St. Mary’s, GA. First big sail in the boat. We had originally intended to go all the way down to FL, then over to Bahamas. However, dockage is scarce down there due to recent hurricanes, and the more southerly you go, the more expensive the docks get (not unexpectedly). We’ve found a nice marina at a reasonable price basically on the GA / FL state line. St. Mary’s is, by all accounts, super cute so we are looking forward to staying there for a bit.
Our professional captain is arriving this evening (Sat). Terri and I intend to sail Luthien ourselves, mostly. However, in order to get down to GA, we need to go around Cape Hatteras, which is infamous for gnarly winds and waves and generally very challenging sailing conditions. Not something we wanted to tackle by ourselves as newbie sailors on our first duo sail. So we’ve got a captain and an additional experienced crew joining us for this first southward leg.
If you don’t hear from us by next Sat, call the Coast Guard !!
